Lucky for us you burnt the midnight oil Dane. A fantastic looking instrument. Just in passing, can you comment on any difference in feel or tone with the new RIC strings compared to the old?

Finally got to crank it up this morning. Yep, sounds like a single coil Rick should. Loud and brash. The sound that used to get me kicked out of bands when I was a kid . Peter, I can't comment on the difference between current and vintage RIC strings as this bass didn't have any on it when I got it. Actually it didn't have a lot of things on it when I got it. Original parts are the jack plate, bridge and tailpiece. Added parts from the RIC Boutique are the RIHS, C64 tuners, all the flat head screws on the bass, the knobs, output jack, and Schaller strap lock pins. The wiring harness is an NOS late 90's assembly while the nut and strings came off my '09 4004 MID. I made the guard and cut the bridge surround from an original stamped brass lap surround and had it triple plated. This is definitely gonna need a fingerboard and a refin. I'm thinking JetGlo as I have nothing in that color.

aceonbass wrote:Decided to burn the midnight oil and attempt stringing this bass up to see if the incredibly thin neck would take the tension of a current set of RIC 4003 nickel rounds (take offs from my 4004MID). To my surprise it did, with only about 1/16" of relief at the 9th fret. So then I decided to actually solder the new pickup into the NOS late 90's 4003 harness I had. Plugged it in, tuned it up, set the harmonics and it actually sounds pretty good. Can't turn it up though since everyone's asleep, but I plan on cranking it up in the AM. The fingerboard has had the finish removed long ago, is pretty dried out and dilapidated with frets that look like replacements. As expected, the bridge is all the way down on the deck, meaning my replacement fretboard will be 1/16" thicker, which should also be stronger so I can get the neck flatter. Since the mojo level in this bass is pretty high (having been made some time around my 4th b-day), I'll play it as is till I can afford to have it restored. Now I just need a toaster top. Anyone have one they'd like to part with? Even if it doesn't work, I can send it to Sergio to have it rewound to around 10K to match what this RIHS probably is.
Hey Dane! I think I have a hot toaster that I unwound to around 9kohm I had it pared with an uncapped 10kohmish Horseshoe and it was a good match.. Would this do?
