I wonder why they would brake overtime ?

You ought to be ok. It's mainly the 80's black ones. Avoid super heavy or stiff strings, as an extra precaution (and good common sense anyways!) and I wouldn't worry.

I believe tightening the strings evenly helps prevent tailpiece breakage when performing a string change. If you tighten all from one side or even one string close to pitch it will not permit the "R" to stay seated properly. My former 610 with black hardware never had an issue even though I had re- powder coated it. Keep in mind that it was heated a second time to 500 degrees F.

Check the tail-lift on this '91 4003 MID BT on ebay. Fits the suggested '91 pattern....

I own a 1991 330/12 with black hardware and a black "R" tailpiece. Should I be worried after reading this thread? Is there any way to safeguard against problems with the tailpiece other than using thinner strings? Mine is strung with a D'Addario EXL 150 set (.010, .010, .013, .013, .017, .008, .026, .012, .036, .018, .046, .026). I should admit that I'm fond of the "R" tailpiece and would rather not replace it with a trapeze.

Warrant-need I say more?

Also, that's when grunge broke and pretty much overtook the airwaves and record sales. Bye bye, Cherry Pie
