various surrounds and pickguards have been mounted on it. as long as the fretboard is not popping off at the first few frets you'll have no problems with that bass slaying a few folks !

Thanks, that's a very nice vieuw in the past of this bass ; )jps wrote:
It is a '73 and used to look like this (except for the replaced tuners and horseshoe pickup), going by the original finish still in the cavities.

A friend of mine in Philadelphia has that FG 4001, now, it is in good hands.

My feeling is that the magic is in the maple, and I think that's some nice wood you have there, with more than a little bit of mojo from all it has been through. I bet if you put on a tailpiece, bridge, and tuners and strung it up, that bare body would sound like a 4001. So I'd say that doing as little as possible to the wood is the best choice.remknorretje wrote: I want to rebuild her in a bare ratRick, with only the necessities to give her the sound i like most.
Not sure if filling-up the hole from the bridge pu will be posible in a nice way..
A Jazz-style pickup fits very nicely in the bridge pickup route (use a Jazz neck pickup, its string spacing matches best). I played my 4001 that way for many years, it sounded great. With the neck pickup route opened up a little like that, you might have quite a choice of pickups that would fit there.
All in all, a very nice score!
Turn on, tune up, rock out!

I like the id, starting like that (keeping the hole like it is) but prever a high gain in the neck position, but i do like you way of thinking, the mojo way ; )songdog wrote: My feeling is that the magic is in the maple, and I think that's some nice wood you have there, with more than a little bit of mojo from all it has been through. I think it'd look better with a Rick bridge.

Re: How old is this baby?
Good for you as it is a pretty bass with a very nice sound.
I also gave myself a reality check after some ebay searching for black 4001/4003's. I'd better turn my '73 4001 MG into a JG. The MG yellowed not very nice to my taste and a JG with FWMOP and CB would really be a "classic".
