As I mentioned, these things are very standardized. It would make little sense to manufacture pots with odd, non-standard sized shafts since you would almost certainly have to supply the knobs to fit them as well. Far better to just go along with the standard and allow your customers to select knobs made to fit standard shaft sizes.

Of course, there's the metric standard sizes, which do differ from the inch sized pots. But the standard size there is 6mm, which is equivalent to 0.2362 inches, only 0.0138 inch smaller (about the thickness of a business card) and is close enough to a 1/4 inch shaft to accommodate a 1/4 inch knob just fine...
