That should be do-able; it's just a matter of loosening or replacing the cable that goes through the tailpiece and around the endpin. Generally these are kept in place by a small screw clamp (for lack of a better term) that secures both ends of the cable. Adding a bit of slack to the cable will allow the tailpiece to rest a bit closer to the fingerboard. Of course, you don't want to go too far or you'll decrease the break angle over the bridge which might lead to too low of a tension to keep the soundpost firmly in place. If it's just a couple of mm, it should be fine.

i used to own a tacoma thunderchief bass strung with TI acousticore strings, and if that bass had been fretless,i think it would have been hard to tell it from an upright tone. the fretted version i had with those strings was a bit too clacky, but i think the tacoma was one of the better sounding abg's i ever picked up.

I think I'm gonna put some Roto roundwounds on it, and a drop D tuner...then I should be set
Actually I found out I had the bridge in the wrong place, plus I believe it was backwards. Just toying around with it. Maybe, just maybe if I can do some basic Blues jamming on it, I'll keep it as is. Still believe the project is possible though.
