do we have a definite (as definite as RIC can be) date that production ended on 2-piece necked 4003's with the adjustment at the body? I'm still curious as to when my "not quite an S" bass may have been made. NOTE - it has reverse tuners. Thanks, J

Yeah, I've always wondered about that. I've never actually seen pictures of any others though. This one was like that when I got it, and so far, the neck seems fine so I'm hesitant to do anything about it...

Scott - were they M4 2000 tuners? Schaller has two different mounting screw variations available on their web-site one at 90 degree rotation to the other....

That looks like the same screw location to me. The keywind is not the same though...and the back isn't quite the same. But it should work, and it should fit the existing holes.

My '79 4002 has the same version or M4 that I think Scott is talking about:

This is exactly right. They are the same screws as mine but not the same keywind. The issue is finding one (or five actually) in black.

And to be honest, the squared M4 2000 keywind looks kind of fugly to me. Maybe they'll grow on me in time. It just seems kind of wrong to have a curvy head with squared off keywinds like that to me.

It doesn't matter too much. It's just been something I've wanted for a while.

Completely blacking out the S/5 has worn off and I'm considering going the white pearloid instead of the current black pearloid I have now.

And yes, this is exactly like Jeff's 4002--which I didn't know. Cool.

I have seen them into the middle of 1986. I had a silver that was ZB and my very first Rick which was a ZG. The ZB adj at the body and the ZG at the headstock. It falls in there. Then all of the shadows were headstock..
