Same with me, in 78 I wondered what those screws did.

That's how you got that upright sound.............now the secret has been let out.
You have to admit the tone came out sweet and was a perfect fit for that recording! :)

I Tried on 2 occasions, some 25 years apart for about less time than it took to move the pad in and out of place. It was not for me. Replaced it with aluminum HS on current older Ric 4000 for intonation issues, and happy for the extra real estate in the playing area between bridge and pickup. The mute (and really the whole bridge) is just one of those things I can't appreciate . I love the bridge on my cii, however.

I've used it a couple of times but i like to be able to control my sound.
Switching between muting the tone or not (i like some notes to ring) but it's impossible under one song so i just figured it's a lot easier to use palm mute instead.

So.. i don't use it and probably never will.

I use mine every once in a while on my current Rics to make sure that they still work! On my old Jetglo 4003S I raised the mute just high enough so the foam would barely touch the strings...just to have a different tone from my other basses...

I never did, at first in 1982 when I bought my 77' 4001 the mute foam was deteriorated and I didn't even know what that space was for..lololol Then I got the 76' 3000 and same thing... I did find out what the space was for but did nothing about it.

Then last year my friend and forumite "johnallg" gave me some foam and I then replaced it on both guitars. I just replaced a whole new mute assmbly on the 77' 3001. So to make a long story short.... since replacing all 3 mutes I use them all the time now.

I DIG EM!!!!!!

Mine doesn't adjust properly so I don't use it and it took me the first few hours that I owned my 4003 to realize that is how the bridge is grounded, cause when I got it it buzzed like crazy due to the bridge not being grounded. The guy I bought it from moved the mute adjustment screws and used them as strap buttons.
