For some reason, when I see that picture I seem to dribble a bit...

If I was ever going to buy 5 string bass pickups, they would most likely be the Bartolini pickups seen in the previously posted trans green 4004Cii/5, or the StingRay5 style Bartolini pickups. Maybe I'd ask Sergio if he could make me 5 string bass pickups.

I'll have to see how the Barts sound. Greg, the now previous owner

, thinks I'll like 'em so I'll give 'em a fair shake but since I can't leave anything alone I'll probably buy the Nordstrand Big Singles and see which I prefer. I only wish 5 string Darkstars were in production. I'll know more next week. Come to daddy.......

So...Brian..what's to become of the "none more black" 4004 that was to be the doner for the original project?

Yeah, if he could make you one, or a pair, that would cover the strings, but stay within the confines of the original routing, sort of like the Jeff designed-ish, with the upper parts, so you would not have to route the bass, you will certainly notice a difference. IMHO.

Well a few weeks ago I asked the luthier slated to do the project to just send it back so I could forward it to another artisan for the work. This was before Greg contacted me about buying his BTW. Once I closed the deal with Greg I contacted the new fella and changed the project plan to just restoring it to it's Blackened goodness and bringing my routing job for the ACG electronics up to professional standards. Once I can send him some detailed pics I'll get a quote and at that point I'll decide if I want to tweak the paint job or maybe alter the marker inlays. I'm leaning towards keeping it plain but we'll see. Im looking forward to getting it back in my mitts......it really is a fantastic player and the ACG electronics give it a killer Ric meets Wal vibe.
It's slated to go under the knife in December......along with the 5-er.

Hmmm...and why is the new 5ver going under the knife?

This would be appropriate, I think, for inlays.

If you notice in the pic there is a plastic cover that conceals where Dale did some work repairing the truss rods. I'm having that filled with wood and refinished. I'll know more once the bass gets here but I'm hoping a matching wood "plate" can be made to fill the area that is removable just in case the rods need work again. Plus if it's a recessed removable "plate" that would mean that the whole bass won't need refinishing.
Also since I have a few months I should be able to settle on which pickups I want and there's a possibility that I may go with the ACG electronics in this one as well and, if so, I'll get the drilling/routing done while it's in the shop. So nothing major. It's nice that's it's already modified.......it makes decisions like this easier for me.

I see enough of that at work and the last thing I want to do is advertise.

A week has passed. This bass intrigues me. Is the neck really wider than normal, or is it just photographic distortion? Need more pictures also.

I just picked it up this evening. I took a few pics when I unpacked it........see this thread.....

......and "yes" the neck is wider like a more traditional 5 string.
