I was hoping these new Epis might make a cool backup guitar, but I went and played a few and they just feel crummy. Even their set neck solidbody stuff has this crummy feel to the necks that just says "lame" to me, very unorganic and plastic like.

It's weird though, a lot of the really low end Gibson stuff feels like jumk too. I think it's a real shame that you have to spend over a grand to get some fine quality these days out of the Gibson line. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule, but most I try just don't do it for me, be it the finish, hardware, workmanship, playability, or combinations of the above.

Unfortunately, this just gives fuel to all of the Gibson haters out there, too bad, a good Gibson is worth it's weight in Gold.

I think like in the Rick world, Gibson connosieurs would just as soon or sooner spend their $2K on a vintage piece.

I'll tell ya though Jason, I really wanted to like the Epiphone JR/Specials in TV yellow, but I just couldn't bond with them

I hear you, Mike. My SG Custom was pretty repulsive when I bought it. But it cleaned up pretty nicely with a lot of work. I'm not finished upgrading the pickups, but it now feels and plays first class. I think that's the caveat with Epiphone - be prepared to invest some work and in the end they can be good guitars.

My Korean made Sheraton II, OTOH, has needed only some refining of the fret work, and it plays and sounds awesome. It's not my main guitar because it so darn big with a big fret board too. But I love it - it's like an acoustic.

The hollowbodies really aren't that bad, that's why I specified it in my posts. The solidbodies just seem so......
