I use a belt/disc sander for something like this even if I have to fabricate a one time use jig. Considering that I would do engineering projects that sometimes lasted months, I have the patience for tedious work. If I was still at work a mill would do this in minutes.

I do too, after cutting them out on a band saw. However, I was assuming that Robert perhaps wasn't armed with the proper implements of destruction to mill one himself and was looking for one that would require as little re-working as possible.

It turns out that the blank nuts my former tech has in stock are "not for sale." So, I'll have to do my best to find a nut that can be cut and sanded to the right dimensions. No luck so far with Stuart MacDonald, but Graph Tech is a possibility (thanks, Todd). I never realized how complicated a simple nut replacement coudl be.

I''ve already e-mailed Graph Tech and will fire them a phone call tomorrow regarding graphite nut blanks. If I don't get any results, I'll have to enlist the assistance of my guitar tech, who should know more about these things than I.

Well, now that we're well into 2012, I've decided to go ahead with the string-spacing mod to my 360/12. I've ordered a PTFE slab from Graph Tech (thanks to Todd Bradshaw's suggestions) as well as a 12-saddle bridge and a new set of TI Flats from Chris Clayton at Pick of the Ricks. My tech works at Sam Ash, where they have a used 360/12C63 on the wall. He will be measuring the string-spacing at the nut and at the bridge, and using that George Harrison model as a prototype for my modded 360. I'm hoping to have a guitar that looks like a stock Fireglo 360/12, but essentially plays and sounds like a C63. It took me a while to summon the courage to take the plunge, but this tech just did an amazing job on my 330/12, and the store is only 15 minutes from where I live, so if things aren't right, we'll work together to make them that way. I'm experiencing a mixture of excitement and nervousness, as I always do when one of my guitars is in for major work. Thanks, everyone, for your insights and suggestions. Without the advice of members of this forum I would never have had the courage to take the plunge.

I'm currently having my 360/12 V64 at a luthier, fitting new truss rods and having a new nut cut. Or so I thought...
I bought a Rickenbacker nut blank from Rickysounds in the UK and asked my luthier to cut the grooves with a slightly wider spacing.
Here's the issue: the new nut blank is a full 2mm narrower than the neck and fingerboard of my guitar! The guitar is from 1993 and it seems like Rickenbacker made the newer necks narrower, or different.

Any advice on what to use instead? Bearing in mind I live in Japan and hence would have to buy things via mailorder, if my luthier is unable to source something. He suggested water buffalo?
