Also, why is it strung backwards with the ends of the strings facing outward on the headstock. Is this personal preference?
A black underlayer? got to be referring to the cavity? guitar looks strung up correct to me...
EDit ah that was the before pics....Probably due to someone not having clue how to string up a guitar...This would not be Marks preference as he has posted the before and after pics.....

That looks fantastic, and I'm not even a Mapleglo fan!
Why someone would want to make a MG Rick look like a beat up piece of old brown furniture is beyond me, but good show on bringing the original finish back to life!

All this is true Scotty
The strings were like it when it came to me (...and I shouldn't think that Craig set it up like that either!) and they were of course incorrect because they put unnecessary outward stress on the nut slots. Whoever took a 4" paint brush to it in the first place probably wasn't in the right frame of mind to string it up properly...I would guess.
The pickguard is opal/white translucent as per the original one which was broken, although it probably allows 10% more light transmission that it should do - it's the closest sheet material I could find. The guards varied a lot I know. Paul W recommends lightly spraying the back white to make the guards more opaque. I may do that when I have the top section made, but I'm easy with it.
Thanks for all the kind comments guys. It was fiddly work, but I'm happy with the integrity of the thing and it plays great!

That's actually the correct way to string a guitar. If you string it the other way you'll likely have problems.

Absolutely gorgeous Mark
We need more stories like this...'70's casualties (I'm assuming) being returned to their former glory!

Given the finish wear to the original surface, I think that the seventies are a prime suspect!

I suppose we should be grateful that the former owner didn't cover the guitar with shag carpeting.
Fantastic job, Mark, both with the work itself and with the documenting pics. Thanks for sharing. I love happy endings!

Beautiful job on your restoration, well worth the effort! People do some weird things to their guitars...

There's nothing I can say that hasn't been already said...awesome job, Mark, you should be proud! This wouldn't happened to have been originally owned by Craig Witty?
