My trusty AVRI '62 reissue. This guitar has seen hell and back mostly because it's always been there for me. It has a replaced pickguard, but I don't mind, it's a no-sell. I've got it strung up with 0.011 strings and medium action, and it's great.

The finish is a little sticky, particularly in the neck area. During the summer, it feels like I played it with my hands full of chocolate!

However, there has been a problem with the wiring in recent days. There's a lot of static when plugging in a cable and the controls don't work without anything drastic happening. The volume change is drastic when lowering volume (I shake the knob and there's full on or nothing at all). I need to take it to IVG to get looked at, I think.

Still, a great guitar, and it was a gift from my grandmother for Christmas 2007. In 2009, I started playing it again, and realized how great it truly was.

When you've used an ice scraper to remove the dried-up Jagermeister from the night before, you can think about using the phrase "hell and back"

Buy a can of De-Oxit, remove the knobs, and spray your pots whilst turning the knobs to work in the spray until the noise disappears, and the "sweep" of the control returns.

For the jack noise, remove the plate from the body and carefully bend in the leaf spring cable lead end contacts so they hold the end more snugly. Use a practice amp or amp at low volume and plug the cable into the jack after you make the adjustments, and if there's still some noise, adjust some more until you hear no noise. It should work.

I made similar adjustments to a particularly noisy output jack on my `84 AZ blue 360 WB, which was making noise at SCARF `10 (my fault-left the guitar in its stand plugged in and someone tripped on the cable at one point, damaging the jack) but is now noiseless-it's the original jack with a lot of miles on it-good show RIC, for using durable, reparable, quality components.

Jake, the term "Hell and back" doesn't encompass "my mon got a flat tire while picking me up from school and we had to walk home."

Thanks for the tips, Paulie. Any suggestions on making the finish less sticky?

Jake and Ivan: Don't let this grizzled bunch of mean, inglorious bathtubs get you down. All of them would gladly trade ages with either one of you. They just can't remember the days when they had no decent 'hell and back' stories....... It's the Wizenheimer's disease. Hang tough, guys.
