How many is too many?

It probably can be narrowed down to disposable income and the level of personal happiness:

If you have any extra cash to "invest", a great-quality guitar is probably a better bet than a savings account or CD, which are currently paying less than 1%. So, if you look at a guitar purchase as an investment, you can buy it, enjoy it, and then eventually sell or trade it for the next great guitar, and probably gain in the process, assuming it's kept in great condition to be attractive to the next buyer.

As long as life's necessities aren't being ignored, then the question just comes down to the personal happiness question: if you want it and can afford it, the only other question should be "Do I have the space to keep it?" If the entire collection makes you happy, and another would enhance the happiness level, then go for it!

I always justified my musical instrument purchases, including guitars, basses, tubas, double bass, keyboards, other horns, etc., by immediately going out and finding a gig that would pay it off in a reasonable amount of time. I've also horsetraded a few instruments around that didn't do it for me, or requirements changed, like the Les Paul I finally sold due to my chiropractor bill.

Tonight, I found a guitar I'd like to add to my collection. The problem is that my darling other half says something has to go before something new comes into the house. Well, I'm not too keen on getting rid of anything any time soon. I'm quite attached to each and each is unique in its own way. I choose carefully, though she mightn't appreciate it in quite the same manner as do I. I've grown attached to each and every guitar and bass in my collection. They're not all 'show pieces', but they do matter to me.

The addition could be number 16. No, they're not all Rics. In fact, this addition would be my first SG. I have to ask for my darling's sake, though, how many is too many?

No, I'm having to put the brakes on any & all purchases now. Life is demanding my attentions be elsewhere for a wee bit. Who knows, though. When there's some time to consider things later on, I might just have to buy myself a new guitar! Oh, and I'm keein' the girl
