Tail lift - all black ones do.
Binding loose - it can be re-glued.
Crack at nut - it is only that the nut has shifted and the paint that wasn't scraped before the clearcoat was applied at the factory has cracked. At worst the nut needs to be re-glued with Elmer's or yellow wood glue.

Get it and clean that baby up with Zymol.

I love this forum.

No, I have to wait until Saturday to buy it, but I definitely am going to because of you folks...
...and I may have even found someone with a 7-screw black tailpiece who is willing to sell.

What a nice place this is. Thanks so much to everyone for the enthusiasm and advice.

Deffo get this. Its practically the same as my '82 Ric, same color fade, under nut crack and tal lift. I paid £590 for it back in the day... Still have it, killer bass!

Definitely worth it! You can make the existing tailpiece a seven screw if you wish.

Speaking as a man on a tight budget I would definitely spend that much to secure a playable Rickenbacker, even with the very minor issues you describe. I hope it brings you much pleasure 8)

+1!

I don't have funds, but if you passed on this i would find a way to swoop in on it!

Like everyone else said, there's nothing wrong with some honest wear and tear. Clean it up, new case (if you so desire), and enjoy it!

If I don't buy it tomorrow I will be sure to post it's location and contact information for the seller.

She's home with me now, and she's a badass.

I feel a little bad though; it dawned on me as I was handing-over the money that this guy didn't really want to sell; his Craigslist ad was purposefully vague; his asking price was knowingly inflated, and his description and contact information were intentionally lacking. I even e-mailed him the photos I took after my first visit (the ones posted above) and told him he'd receive more interest and higher offers if he posted just one of the photos; he just shaved a few hundred off the price and didn't add the photos.

This thing was somebody's buddy.

I think I'll take her to NPR tomorrow and let her partake in tomorrow's proceedings.

I know these transactions can be tough but, you have to consider a couple of things..If you didn't do it someone else would have. Your intentions are to rehab and get it to max play-ability. We look forward to more pics

Agreed! Also lots of folks buy cheaper RICS just part them out... :( :( :(

Your intentions are at least are in the preservation of the instrument... Play the heck out of it and enjoy the lucky break...

BTW i put it into the register last December based upon the CL posting... Ask Gil or Peter to assign it to you. :D :D

Here be the sisters in all their glory at yesterday's Colorado Public Radio recording session:
Image

Pictured are the newly-acquired 1990 white with black trim, and the 1982 JetGlo with white trim; the latter will be 30 this year.
Sorry for the lesser-quality cell-phone photo, but it was all that was available to me. It's probably not clear that the 1990 is quite a bit cleaner than it was when purchased...

I love that you have black with white trim and white with black trim. Like looking at a negative of the same bass!

That is a beautiful pair. I'm glad you jumped on the white one!

Wow! Thanks for doing that; being a newbie, I didn't realize what an amazing resource this registry was, what with the photos, price charts, and links to discussions about the instrument. I guess I should take some updated high-quality photos now that she's cleaner and sans ugly sticker, yes?

I'm pretty happy about it myself! Truth be told: when I went Ric shopping in the 90's I really wanted a white-with-black-trim, but the JetGlo was too good a deal to pass-up ... and who doesn't love JetGlo? What's also odd about these two basses (and maybe it's a common vintage Ric case flaw) is that they have the same missing/broken top case latch. (I decided to interpret that little detail as providence.)

Unfortunately (well, not for everyone) the JetGlo is betrothed to my good friend who has been playing her exclusively for many years now, but until his incremental payments add-up to the total she's still technically mine.
