Dreaming of finding my original Ric

Really? What gives it away as not being from 1979?

I'm guessing the 1/2" spacing for the neck pickup. I sent an email to the seller asking him to decode.

Kind of stinks. I have no idea of the serial number.

All I can tell you is I purchased it in June of 1979 .It was probably ordered a couple of months earlier(so it might have been a 78), and delivered to King James Music in Brooklyn.

Jetglo,it had a Badass II bridge installed by Ken Smith and a brass nut. There are definitely some identifiable marking which if I saw, I would recognize.

I traded it in during the mid 80s at Norms Music in Brooklyn for a 75 P Bass (that receipt I actually have).

Nothing else to go on . Any Ric detectives with ideas let me know.

I was looking around and looking around and didnt see anything that really called me. the store owner says, hang on a minute . goes in the back comes back a few minutes later and said I had the old piece of **** laying around in the back maybe you'll like it.....I opened up the case, the orange fur and black cherry sunburst finish and the playboy pictures tapped to the inside was all I needed to see.....

pretty good score for a 15 year old with 200 bucks for a "piece of ****" which it wasnt except for the gigantic belt buckle damage to the paint on the back....

sold that thing in 88 for 400 bucks and thought i did good. I should have just left it under my bed for another 10 years and I would have made some serious loot

Pretty cool...Ken was the owner. My friend Stuart worked there pretty much every day so, he was probably there.

I'm pretty certain they were a Ric dealer. Not that it matters but, I remember them pulling out of a Ric box and the cool case with the orange form fitting felt...

I too had a `79 Jetglo 4001 I never bothered to note the SN of and wish I could find. Best of luck with the search!

Good luck with the search, Marc. I wish I could first my very first 4001 as well. I didn't keep the serial number. It was from early/mid 81. I wish I never traded it in for my first 4003 (also from '81), which I didn't like and got rid of.

...the A and D tuner poles are exact parallel (but could be only due to poor eBay pics) and on the pickguard the neck PU spacing is 1/2" and the volume and tone knobs are in straight rhombic order (pick guard and routing for neck PU could be a mod though?) . However these things point to a 1974 production. The early months had red side dots in the neck binding!

You might be right with the serial no. SN... I checked again the eBay ad: The pickguard is a kind of V63, C64 one...replacement? The bridge PU is obviously non-original either. The horns of the cutaways are slightly too big for a 1974 and the truss rod cover is the late 70ies one with raised letters, but who knows...? However, could be a good player if you bring it back to original PUs, but the price is too much on the high side IMO for such a moded instrument.

He said he never knew but, he took off the pickguard and there were extra screw holes.So he admits the pickguard to be non-original but doesn't say anything about routing. He may not know

I guess I gotta start looking through the registry again.

If this was really Geddy's fault, when you traded the 4001 away in the mid '80s you would have bought a Wal or Steinberger.

If you bought a Wal, then you would be really laughing today...
