Fender 9050CL steel flats. They do it all from Friday night to Sunday morning. They growl when you want them to; they are mellow when you need them to; they are consistent from string to string and up the neck; they don't clank; they don't thud out; they are economical and they last forever. They changed me from a roundwound guy. They are the best flats I've seen in over 35 years of playing bass. They're the only strings I gig regularly with now. I'm still on my first set from almost two years ago.

Are the Fender 9050CL OK to put on my 1975 4001? I have TI flats on at the moment but have read the 9050CL have a much higher tension. Don't want to over-stress the neck or increase the tail lift from about the 2mm showing at the moment.

Now this is interesting...are you doing just covers or are you doing some radical to those songs? We used to play Haddaway´s "What is love" as a long jam...kinda squeezed it through a "Grateful Dead filter"...or at least we tried.
Answer to original question; I use my Rickenbacker 4003 with Labella 760FL´s to play mainly blues rock but I use it also for any other kind of music I happen to play (mostly, but not limited to; acid rock, prog rock, doom, heavy rock). It works perfectly for every kind of music.
