No, that's a restoration done by "GW Basses & Luthiery":

The "Dumpster" bass does not have a bound headstock (as far as I can tell):

When it comes time to route the body to add block binding to it, I've seen from numerous repair/restore posts and pics that the block binding route is not to the same depth as the outer layer of white binding's route.

Is there a rule for this? I mean along the lines of "route block binding 37/58ths of white binding depth" Or is it just rule of thumb?

Also, what depth for headstock block binding route?

The checkerboard is properly called "purfling", with the outer layer of lamination referred to as "binding".

When I rout for checkerboard, I route headstock or body approximately 5/32" wide by 1/16" deep. The CB is then scraped flat once dry and the binding applied over it. Many luthiers apply both at once, but I like to take my time.

Following this, both binding and purfling are scraped and sanded level with the guitar's surface.

...and dozens more, but I don't think I've EVER cBd a bass headstock, though I've done them in black, tortoise and white...

Thanks Paul, you sure do gorgeous work. This old wreck doesn't owe me much and I reckon the chequerboard would look good on the bass headstock. Lol, one way to find out I guess...

One of the 8 string 4003 conversions I did a few years ago was sent to Larry Davis to be checker bound and refinished. Here's the headstock.
