Re: pickup selection
On my Rick 1997, I start with all knobs in the full position, with both pickups on and the blend knob half way. Then I back off the bridge volume and the neck tone just enough to sweeten the mix. WONDERFUL sounding tone!

With my wiring mods, I use them all.

Re: pickup selection
Years ago I really only every used both pickups maxed for all scenarios.
These days I use everything.
1) Clean jangle-rhythm chording--> both pickups.
2) Flatpicking country-ish clean OR jazz-like sounds --> neck
3) Distorted lead with compression for lots of harmonics, palm-muting, and other metal-ish gimmicks--> bridge
4) Punky, mildly overdriven snarl --> neck only, but picked very near the bridge.
About the only thing I WON'T do is clean on the bridge pickup only. It's a bit too piercing for me. If I ever record an album maybe I will change my mind.
Of course the biggest factor in these choices is EQing the amp. I used to scoop the amp settings, which sounds good for a stereo but not so great for a guitar.
I'm still not sold on the 5th knob. . .
