I also have a 4000. I recently got a 1981 4000 myself. The bass sounds great, but the neck is a bit high. I think the neck joint is a bit loose and needs to be reglued. I was actually thinking about coming on here and asking about some of you guys' input on some things. I was thinking of getting it to Dale Fortune (He did a great job on my 1968 4001) but I need to see if I still have his contact information. If I can't track him down again, who else would you all recommend for this kind of job? Another thing is that the finish is just about gone. It was/is mapleglo, but there are parts of the bass that almost seem like they are bare wood. Would it be a good idea to refinish it? I don't intend to ever sell it, so while I would like to keep all my Rics all original, I really would like to see this bass as a fireglo. I've always wanted a FG Ric, and if I have a chance to do it with this one, I just might do it. What do you think? Here are a couple of pics...

While i like a vintage finish as well as the next guy,i would say go for it! Paul's example here is one of my favorites of all time. (Love the gold plastic on the firegloviolin finish)

While I like gold plastic generally, I'd really like to see an AFG 4000 like the one I did above, with either stock white plexi guard, or a nice shade of pearl white, back-painted, as on this BB 1998:

You can see how the pearl back-paint reflects the light (although the "flop" effect is tough to photograph at this scale!) and how the polished edges and the shadows of the knobs add lots of depth to the effect. It's subtle and more elegant than plain white, but not as in-your-face as MOTS.

Jingle jangle, that's gorgeous! Can you also do work on the neck joint? It seems like the joint loosened up and there's play in it now. The strings are too high to play it very long, but the tone is great! I'd like to see how much it would cost to get that worked on and then possibly get a refin, although I'm still undecided on that part still. I DO have two mapleglo 4001's, so maybe I should....it seems like the group here is leaning toward doing it....damned peer pressure!!!

From the rear photo, it looks like the two pieces of the body are separating at the neck joint. :|

The body and neck are fine...it's the neck joint that is loose. I'm stil undecided about the refin, but I already have 2 vintage Rics that are both in MG. I've always wanted an FG, but there's no way I could afford a new one right now, soooooo...I'll just have to see what happens...
