there was damage to the the nut its not level, its pointing down, so there is the answer. how would that damage occur anyway. AVOID!!!

Definitely avoid! That is NOT what I surmised from the OP! As already said, yes, that's from damage other than weather checking. AVOID!

For one thing, that's a classic area and sign for a mis-hap.

The spyder lines mostly radiate from the edge of the nut.

The nut is in crooked, and they used to be put on before the CV so they had shiny sides and seamless appearance. Not sure lately.
