The closer you are in diameter for the 2 strings, the easier the intonation, if you ignore the rest of the sound qualities. After all, no one complains about b or e pair, since they are identical.

For that "trademark" Ric sound, you want a wound G and a plain octave. .17W and .10 should fit the bill if intonation is your main concern. The .08's tend to break very easy in my experience.

Don't have to break the bank --- you can order a range of individual plain and wound strings from Juststrings.com or other online vendors.
