Thank you gents...I do enjoy them all. But I also really enjoy the group geek out here on the RRF. I appreciate the ability to share my Rick obsession with others.

Very nice collection Scott. Even one 4003 is too many for me.

I too have three very similar basses (Precisions) that I shuffle between for gigs. I totally get it - find something that works, shake things up a bit (color, fretboard wood and pickups in my case), and you'll have a few nice pieces to choose between for every gig while keeping a consistent sound, feel, etc. My basses all have the same strings and are kept in the same tuning.

I also really like not having to bring a different type of bass as a backup for every gig, unless I want to.

Thanks John, I love the classic P bass tone and really wish I could afford to do that with Precision's too. I have done the same thing in the past with Jazzes and Stingrays too but the Rics are cool to me because there is a real tonal difference and unique voice to each of my Rics. Not to mention each one has a different feel to it as well. I can not wait to add an older 4001 to the mix to get a real feel for the difference in the cllassic 4001's and the modern 4003's.

as to why we have more than one Ric.....

OK, I can see liking a variety of finishes, but from a standpoint of playing, why have more than 1 bass? I have (4)- 12 string acoustic guitars, mainly to spread my playing out evenly for wear, and also for alternate tunings. But we are talking talking about 12 strings as opposed to 4.

In case I am dumb in the bass department please explain to me why so many basses? Of course you know I would have at least a maple, and a black if I could afford it!

I'm asking to try to learn something. and by the way I do like your choice of instruments. Its unfortunate, but most of the local folks like to hide a lot of the technology, and won't share all the "secrets". I have learned a good amount just by asking in the Ric and Guild forum, and hanging out there.

I still have lots of $ in the bank for playing drums, but I like actually playing music (on guitar), and drumming is a different realm. I just love it when I now have a drummer to back up my playing, and laugh to myself at how ****** of skills that they have. But I'd rather be out front on the guitar.

so I am liking this exchange just the same.

Thanks for the photos Scott and the discussion surrounding your Rickenbacker instruments. Showing our basses and guitars on a public forum is what the RRF is all about.

Owning more than one Rickenbacker is a popular subject matter on this Forum and we encourage the posting of photos and discussing the same. Naturally we like to share proudly our stable of instruments whether they be Rickenbacker or some other line. If I had these nice basses I would want others to see and appreciate them as well.

I have never played a fretless bass and marvel at those who have these instruments so discussion surrounding them always gets my attention. I look forward to more photos and discussion of your instruments and thank you for taking the time and effort to present them here.

Thank you so much! I must be honest and say that the 4003FL was totally not what I expected it to be sonically and playing wise either. I guess we all can have misconceptions of one type or another when it comes to gear that we are not familiar with. I have been a longtime lover of the 4001/4003 obviously and was aware that the FL version was available but never connected the sound of the 4003 with the typical fretless "voice" I hear in my head. I have been playing fretless and string bass for decades and have experienced lots of great and not so great fretless basses. Some basses make great fretted basses but not so much when it comes to fretless versions. I was not expecting what I heard when I heard the 4003FL. It is very warm and articulate and organic and woody. There is no over presence of unnatural highs nor any muddy wolf tones. It has a rather sophisticated and very musical tone. I am bringing it to my acoustic trio gig tonight and cannot wait to use it. The FL has reminded me about the whole "not judging a book by its cover" bit as well as what assumptions usually lead to. Thanks again...love the RRF and all of the Ric sharing that goes on here!

Four Ric basses was certainly the magic number for me. I've been stopped there for 4-5 years now. I've got a 2030, along with two 4001S models from 1982 and a late 90's 4003.

I like the fretless. It's look had me scratching my head for a bit as I haven't seen many of them.

I have 32 basses, 3 of which are Rics...I've never sold anything to acquire something else...I guess I just like having them around...My wife asked me the same thing. I explained how some had active pups, others were passive, maple vs rosewood, this one has flats, that one has rounds, etc,..she looked at me and asked "But why so many?" I took her by the hand and I said, "Honey, I have all these basses, because God said I could only have one of you..." She kissed me and went in the house...

Having lots of different colored basses makes it easier to find a matching shirt for the gig.

Me 3! Except I pick the shirt first, and then the RIC bass!

I Like your collection,and altho i am a s-model guy,myself,your basses are testament to how great the newer basses are. My collection was supposed to be just 2,but when i bought my 3rd,i found myself unable to part with either of the other ones.
The 3 i have are VERY different sounding to each other,i have flats on one,and different RW sets on the other 2.
