Will give it a try later. What is the reasoning behind this?

Give me a try:

Dead spots are a result of a resonant frequency of a part or an assembly group. It could be from the rod(s) or the neck itself. This resonant frequency is wiping out the frequency of the string: It oscillates against this, induced by the string itself.

To change the rods very slightly is a possibility to neutralise or minimise this effect. If You change one part of that resonant frequency thing You change all. And maybe the frequency now is between two notes or it disappears.

Have tried altering the rod tensions in various combinations and to be honest I don't think it's made much (if any difference). I'm going to let the neck settle overnight now and check it again tomorrow.

I don't know whether reducing the string height has played a part in it, I know a higher string height is supposed to give you more sustain. I might try raising it again to check.

Don't want to mess with it too much and make it unusable for tomorrow night's gig!

Then give it a rest, IMHO.
Even if there is a little issue - then You know where there is a little "weakness" (hey, it is still a new, working Rickenbacker with a few extra cosmetics needed - other basses are and stay miles away from the sound You already got!).
Better, than to learn it on stage without the possibility to react in time.

Well, a couple of weeks on and with a final bit of truss adjustment I think I've got it to it's optimum setting, the 'bass' side could stand a slight bit more more tightening but I know if I do it's impacting on the 'treble' side so that's pretty much it.

Still not entirely resolved the 'dead' spot issue on that section of the 'D' string but it doesn't seem to be as bad as it was and it is hardly noticeable now, I think the 'D' string generally doesn't resonate as well as the other strings so it might be a bit of a dodgy string issue even though it''s fairly new.

Dropped the string height down now as well so it's right how I like it and checked the intonation again - spot on!

Final job was to ditch the pickup cover and fit a black pickup bezel, looks really nice now.

One 4003 fully set up and ready to go!
