Talking with Alan Davey (Hawkwind), he has an SD in the neck postition on his 4001. He said it was a load better than the stock neck pickup, but added that it was an early SD, and that early ones were vastly superior to later ones. I've only ever tried the huge SD bridge humbucker before, so cannot comment on whether there was any evolution of the SD neck pickups. Anybody else know? The SD bridge humbucker actually sounded OK, but the bass lost it's ric distinction! It was meaty, but had no finesse!
