Plugging that way (mono into Ric-O-Sound) you will only get the treble pickup. And yes, that does help, combined with what you've tried so far. At this point you need an ohmmeter. You need to read the coil winding for that pickup. It should be around 11.4k (11,400) ohms. Measure right at the grey wires coming from it. If it were mine, I would measure at the pickup and at the switch. That would tell you if it is the grey coax cable going from the pickup coil to the switch (good at the coil, not at the switch).

Hi John thanks for the reply, it is so frustrating as all looks well, i have arranged to take the bass to an electronics expert on monday , the guy used to build and repair all types of high end electronics, amps, hi fi etc etc, he has all the gear to make the electrical measurements. so fingers crossed we get to the problem my instincts are telling me the 3 way selector!!. cheers

I had a wire too close to the pickup selector switch and it interfered with proper closing of the contacts.

If you have a new pickup on the way, why not unsolder the old one now and check the resistance. I can probably fix it, if so.

I still think it is a switch, jack, or wiring.

Hi john had another go tonight , i even re soldered the wiring underneath the pickup as i had to take the shrink wrap of the fine wiring as that could have been the problem. put it all back together still the same i hear the pickup slightly . tomorrow new pickup arrives so will know for sure if that was the issue. keep you posted , i just want my bass operational again. cheers George
