Nice tone and lines, for sure. And that's an Alesis 3630 compressor if I'm not mistaken? I read much malign about said unit online on other websites, but I've had one for 22+ years and love it so much I just bought a back-up. One needs to know how to properly use a compressor before one decides it is a piece of junk. I suspect user error, but I digress...

But I agree about the "dumb Jazz" talk. Word is we are of clean noses here. Therefore, since we don't like on-line slamming of RIcks, perhaps we shouldn't slam other makes, lest we become fodder for the all-important internet purpose of many: to be dubbed hypocrites.

I have a really nice Fender CIJ FL Jazz that is a go-to for me in many situations. Doesn't mean I don't love my RIcks, which I also use often. It is not a requirement of the Rick family to put down instruments of other makes; especially those that may be owned and loved by members here. I only say this because, if we are to be true to the image we project, shouldn't we uphold it?

If we need to do anything here it's lighten up. No one was slamming anything, It was just a dumb joke in the thread title.

Yea, it's a 3630, good eye. I bought it in the 90's and remember that's what everybody was using back then. I didn't know it's since had bad reviews. I can't see why. It's worked great for me over the years, and it couldn't be more simple to operate (left-most knob down for more compression, up for less)?

About the Fender Jazz, it was just a joke... I figured any serious bass player here also knows and loves the Jazz, and would get the fake rivalry. No harm intended!

I suppose that tone can be seen as at least an approximation of what a 4001 sounds like with TI flats...

I love that "flats" sound with the pick click sound at the start of the note. It is my favorite tone. Joe Osborne is one of my bass Gods, and I've always loved his sound and playing. I've been partial the sound of hard felt picks for a long time now, good click with them (and fat bass) without too many tricks needed. If I use a pick, I pretty much just use the felts. I bought my first ones when I was just a kid in the early 80's.
I guess I need to search for your additional Osborne tracks - did you do "Midnight Voyage" (Mama's and Papa's)?

I have a follow-up. Am I correct in assuming that the bass player for Heart's "Crazy On You" did the same compression trick? I love the bass tone on that song.

Amen Fretless one of the main reasons I stopped coming here, and wala, first tinme I come back, more of the same bashing bs, Im glad Joe played that so called dumb jazz, because Joes playing and that dumb jazz that and the tone he got with the pick was a big influence on me to play bass, so see Joe choose the right bass for what he needed to do, no Ric needed there the dumb jazz got the job done just as well, as far as done, im done with this site again, came back to check it out, but, ohj well, same bs.

Joe's Jazz was the first Jazz bass Fender made, it was a a prototype that they made in 1960 and then gave him to try out and he wouldn't give it back! Has got to be one of the most valuable Jazz basses in existence. He doesn't play it anymore, too beat. There was a good article in Bassplayer Mag about him several years ago.
