Technically this is how it's supposed to be so your setup is probably perfecto right now. You want there to be a hair of that "fallaway" in the upper register because the string excursion increases the closer you get to the end of the neck.

Yes my bass has the neck pickup at the 1" position, but the rout looks like it is bigger than it needs to be and it could almost accommodate the pickup at the 1/2" position.

Probably is. 1975 was a transition year for 1/2" to 1" neck position.
