I can understand why you want to leave it natural/mapleglo - I have a a Gretsch Country Club from early 1954 (it was made in February, and as a result, has some features that are more like the Electro II it replaced, than the later Country Clubs). It was originally finished in Caddy Green, since it was made as a Model 6196. Due to the finish getting totally trashed over the years, the previous owner completely restored the guitar (reset the neck, rebound the body & neck, and refinished the guitar). Since he liked Gretsch Country Gents, he applied a new transparent burgundy finish to the guitar. While this is not a correct finish for a Gretsch Country Club (they were never made in that color), it shows off the guitar's fantastically flamed maple top (a production oddity, since 6196 'Clubs normally had spruce tops) off to a tee. So, like the finish on your early Capri/Combo, the finish on my Country Club is staying the way it is.

Here's the one I think you are talking about. It used to be up on William Young's website showing the resto process, but his site is temporarily (?) down. I got this photo (pre-restoration) from his FB page. It is a 325 Longbody and did have the extra piece at the top of the bass horn. But no butcherblock top and no soundhole.

This guitar has the same body as V87, but has a full-scale Combo-Style neck and peghead, and is the one featured in Graham's avatar here.

I can't remember off hand, but I think it's a 9 or 11 piece butcher block top. Not particularly highly figured.
