Now, now, "different" doesn't always mean "better". I have no intention of selling my 360v64 even though I recently picked up a '68 365 OS that looks a lot like it - you might know the guitar.

If they didn't all have their own charms, I wouldn't "need" so many of the damn things....

Overheard by me in a deli in Burbank a few years ago:

PROPRIETOR: Jay, which is your favorite [of your old cars]?

JAY LENO: If I had a favorite, I wouldn't have so many!

I was just being goofy (and ironic). I have a turquoise V64 six string that's a great guitar! I wouldn't trade it for that new C63 six string. I'm not a fan of the recent "target burst" Fire-glo that Rickenbacker has been using recently.

I'm kidding about "better" :)

On paper, the C63 has better specs with the x-bracing and CNC precision, but the V64s are fine guitars. I've had a few and liked most of them.

And indeed, they're all different, that's why I keep buying more of them.

I got the new Guitar Center "catalog" in the mail today and they have a picture of one of these listed as a "Guitar Center exclusive".

I visit my local Guitar Center about once a week (because I'm insane!) and I've never seen another one other than this first one I photographed. Have any of you? I wonder how many were made?

They did 50 I think - just like the other Guitar Centre exclusives done this year. All made week 16 of 2014.

There are 21 of them up on the website.

Chicagoland got two of them. Checked out the closest and ended up bringing it home. Nice guitar. I need to do a little setup work, though.

The link should be around for a while yet:

Beautiful guitar! Looks like some nice grain on the fretboard. How does it sound?

You mean, other than "Pret-ty darn good!"? ;)

I'm probably not the best reviewer as my hands-on experience with vintage Ricks is limited the '68 365 OS (mentioned earlier) that I picked up recently. I also have the 330S TBG I picked up last year which is x-braced, so that's pretty much my frame of reference on how 'vintagey' it is.

The overall sound is similar to those, but I was struck by what seems to me to be a notably stronger bass response when running a little distortion. Nothing seemed unusual in terms of pickup height, and the 330S has what should be the same scatter-wounds, as well (short pole neck). Once I got it home, I confirmed there was nothing notably different on pickup to string spacing and that it is 'voiced' a little different. Don't know if that holds for the run or just this particular one. Otherwise, I'd say its pretty much what I expected.

The fretboard is a really neat piece of wood. Overall, a lot lighter than anything else I have, but with that nice dark and interesting grain.

The neck is somewhere between the really thin '68 and the more recent necks. Thin enough that I push/pull it out of tune a little if I'm not being at least a little careful, but very comfortable.

My comment in needing setup isn't a knock on RIC or GC (they offered setup, I told him I'd do it). Pretty good as is. Bridge was a little high and the nut is slotted pretty shallow. I have no issue with needing to do a little filing to get it where I want it - which I still need to do. That's much better than someone wanting a higher action having to put a new nut in, so very understandable.

Very happy with it.

...but I'm still not getting rid of the v64.... :P
