I may have missed it, but the horns look very similar to the early '80s.
That or I'm hallucinating....

These are leftover body wings from 4002s.

Very nice! Must be very exciting.

Lo-Z or just the 4002/J pickup location?

If/when I find a butchered/routed 4003 carcass for a good price, I plan on doing a similar project. Solid color, plain (non-CB) binding, maybe a preamp.

Awesome project! I love everything about it (though I would have wanted to see figured maple).
Congrats and welcome!

Sepp

Thank you everyone! And im really glad that im able to show everyone on here the progress on this as we go along with it. Sepp I have drooled over your two 4002's for some time now and i gotta say the restoration of the waterlogged 4002 is probably my favorite thread on here, i swear i must have read through it 4 or 5 times  Im actually going to go with custom pickups on this. Ive played both the 4002's that we have here in the museum and the pickups sound great but im always going to be a sucker for the 4001/4003 sound so me and Richard have come up with pickups that will give me that sound (on steroids) and fit inside of the pickguard of the 4002 without alteration to it. I should have pictures of the pickups and the wired up pickguard today and as soon as the bass is through 30 sand today (and possibly first sealer coat) ill be sure to post some pics. If all goes according to plan the instrument should be done by next week!

Definitely do it if you can find one for a good price! The process hasnt been that difficult at all so far.

Electronics and wiring are admittedly not my strong point so Richard helped out alot with this next step. We used a 4003 wiring harness and replaced the push pull knob with the onboard distortion unit that im putting into this. We replaced the single mono jack for a single stereo jack, Reason for this being it will save battery life for the distortion by only allowing it to be on when i have the bass plugged in. Richard had my pickups made especially for this bass, They are made with a neck and bridge bobbin of a 4003 model. Each pickup has an alnico magnet and is wound ten thousand times and they are both putting out around 14-14.2k. Im extremely anxious to hear how they sound!!!

Very nice. Perhaps, you will move up to product development! And, when you need another car and decide to sell, pm me first.

It looks great. You seem to have been inspired, and thats what is most important.
