I had the same problems on my old 4001.
I found a spare set of pickup casing screws, and ground the heads as flat as possible, thus giving an extra 2 or 3mm (about 1/8" !!) and it made all the difference. being the "completist, I've still got the original screws, to go back in if required)
Actually - the nuts/bolts weren't ric specific, but they fitted well!

Received the magnet this morning, love it. The pickups are balanced and the growl is wonderful. Thank you so much for the tip.

The last time I saw Ted was July 2011 at his place to show him progress on my book. I think I talked with him on the phone once a few months after that. Since then, after dozens of phone calls to his house and cell, he's never answered or returned my calls. For a long time, I was hoping to use a condensed version of his "anatomy" series he had posted here in the book, but after promises on his part, and extensions of deadlines on my part, he never finished the series. I had to drop the idea of using it in the book. I hope it is still available here, but I really don't know where to get at it anymore. I know he has at least one forumite's bass reconstruction project in his workshop, one that had gone missing for some time under his watch, but as far as I know, Ted has not responded to that forumite's contact requests in years. I always thought of Ted as a talented, knowledgeable guy, and good friend, and his disappearance saddens me and likely everyone else here.

I always took special note when Ted was "saying" something on here.

I'm glad that you guys passed on the info, played it in a "live" setting at my lesson. It killed....so even sounding and all that growl. My teacher was quite envious

Did you put the magnet under both pups are just the one?
On my V63 the neck pickup is hotter.

I'm in the UK and might give this trick a whirl. Obviously makes more sense for me to buy locally, but looking around, I find a range of pull forces are available on different magnets.
I notice the magnet recommended in this post has a pull force of 18.33 lbs - for those that have tried this, is that significant, does one around that strength work best?
Also (maybe a stupid question), but if later removed, does it leave any residual effect on the srength of the existing magnet?

I turned him on to this forum although I don't remember what forum I met him on, hope he's not lost in space.
PS sorry to hijack the thread.
