As a Rickbass fan(atic) for 40+ years,i think anyone who loves the classic 4000 series owes it to themselves to check these out! I am up to 3 of them,and would be ready to buy a new fretless one should the comapny ever make them.

Yeah, the Ruby 4004L that is in Paul's book is one of them.

POTR has a couple of nice ones 4004's right now too.

As for green frets, I'd say to try Swirl X. Not on a 1st gen Cheyenne like Woody's, but on Ricks that have finished fretboards. I've used steel wool before. It works well, but it's a lot more labor intensive, and masking the fretboard is a PIA.

Thanks,Paul,and Jeff! (And Jeff Scott,too!) You both have had,(in Paul's case,Still have) 4004s that i would love to own.
Paul's stunning hybrid turquoise "Cheyredo", and Jeff's equally stunning jetglo with the cool,replacement pickups that are no longer being made. Both of these were from the production years of the "lowered" pickup positions,which i greatly prefer.

Nice bass! Do you have contact info for Dane Wilder? Are his prices for custom harness reasonable? I've always wanted to convert my controls to Master Volume, Pickup Blend, treble and bass. Question then would be, what do i do with the pickup switch? Leave it as a dummy for cosmetic reasons? i realize that would probably nuke the stereo option, but I really never use it. Any suggestions for how to use the pickup switch in that scenario appreciated.

In 2 of my basses,i have 3 controls,and just used the mini-switch hole for a volume pot,although the hole has to be drilled out a bit larger,so I am not sure if it is a reversable mod,not that i cared about that,but just letting you know in case it is a concern.i will pm you with Dane's email,you can discuss any ideas you have with him. He is very knowledgable,and does impeccable work. I think his prices are very reasonable as well. I had a Cii which i liked a lot,but always thought it sounded a bit....murky. I bought a Laredo that Dane had done a huge amount of custom work to,including an upgraded wiring setup,and had him make me a new VVT/ coil tap harness for the Cii. Night and day difference in the clarity. When i recently acquired the 4004c,the first thing i did was have Dane do a new harness,a bit different this time with Master vol/ pan pot/tone. It's super easy to use. I love both setups,but if you really like to have more tonal variation options,I recommend the VVT/coil taps.
Edit: upon re-reading your post,i guess your bass is a 4001/3? I presumed you had a 4004,so most of my comments would not apply.....
