I gig my 75 4001 regularly. It does look 'road worn' and is a fun bass to play. I started to gig my 4003w earlier this year. I just got my 4003s and it'll see lots of action. My 4001c64s sits back at home unless I feel like playing it out, but more less, it's 'retired' from playing out live. When i gig at a bar or club I'm not sure of, I take my Fender MIM jazz Bass and my Ibanez 5 string. its not as tragic if something were to happen to one of those basses.

'91 4001CS-LH has played hundreds of gigs but is now semi-retired.
'82 4001S-LH has played thousands of gigs with no sign of stopping.
Also own an '80 4003-LH but question was specifically regarding 4001 basses.

I just got her back from the 12th Fret in Portland, OR. She was being re-fret. I'll be gigging her tomorrow night, so I'll try to get some "action" fotos. I'm so glad she's back!!

Play 'em like you stole 'em.

This '68 is a smoky veteran. Seriously. People like hearing a Ric. Deliver the goods.

Yes, if you have one of the best basses ever made, why wouldn't you play it?

My '72 4001 gets gigged regularly, and gets compliments from listeners (especially when I've just put on a fresh set of Rotos).
