Rickenbacker flat wound string question

I've had a set of the old Maxima's for around 7 years now. They have been installed on 3 different Ricks,and seem to retain an eveness of tone string to string,even after all this time. I keep hoping they don't break when i change them,because they sound so good.
The new Labella low tension flexible flats are the best thing i've personally used besides the old Maximas. (not that they are exactly like them,the labellas are SS),but they are really good sounding strings with a similar feel,tension wise.

Jeff, sorry this has taken so long to reply, but to me and reading how the deadness has changed for the better, I would suspect that the E string might be slightly twisted down its length. You might try backing off the tension and at the ball end twirl the string to assure there is no twist, or to clear it if there is. I came upon this with one set of round wounds where one string was dead sounding. Once the twist was relieved, the string behaved as it should. Worth a try.
