All I know about string tension is what it does to the neck of the bass, not the actually measurements in ft. lbs. of torque. That being said, Pyramids aren't very high tension, but higher than Rotosound Stainless Roundwounds. An example of a high tension string would be Fender Stainless Flats, they quickly turn your bass into a field-ready compound bow. I play Pyramids on both my Ricks (4003, 4001v63) and my Reissue '62 Precision with no ill effects. You will like the Pyramids, maybe not immediately 'cause I think it takes about 5-8 hours of playing before they really settle in and sound the best. They also last long, I leave 'em on for 1.5-3 years depending on the bass, really offsets the cost...

Fender flats will work good on certain Rics though, even 4001's, I have the med. lights on a 78 4001 and it sounds and plays great and the neck is a straight as I want it to be, which is pretty straight, I have about one business card of relief at the 12th fret with both ends pressed down, I also have them on a 95 4003, I wouldn't hesitate to put med, light Fender flats on any 4003, I wouldn't put the med. gauge on anything though, too risky, although I have used them on 4003's and V63's before. They're nice if you like that old fashioned thumpy sound. And actually are pretty clear. I think both the Pyramids and the TI's are nice strings however, they just all sound different from each other. I like the taut feel of high tension strings. Nice for finger plucking.

is there a huge tension difference between rotosound flats and rounds?

The flats have much thicker core wires. My trick for testing the tension of a string is to take one out of the packet and try to gently flex the end part that goes round the tuner. The roto swings, ernie balls etc are quite bendable, wheras a tried a set of standard guage GHS rounds and they seemed stiffer. Once on the bass i was proved right - WAY more tension even at the same gauge.
