OK, mine is no longer 7000 miles away, it's sitting in its case here in the same room with me. I'll open her up a bit later and make that measurement.
By the way, this is the bass that's in Paul's book on page 63 showing the truss rod arrangement for early 4003 models. It's definitely the way it came from the factory...

Well, here's the measurement, 3/8 inch is correct, at least for 1984...

Right, and clearly not the same type of nuts as on the 4001 rods (hexagonal standoff). I'll have to append the info for future editions of the book (if ever).
