Also check the bridge and nut, the string is not being choked either end i have seen this before on weak E strings, i would not recommend mucking around with the old pole pieces, that is a failure waiting to happen. if it is so bad and nothing helps, swap the bridge pickup for an adjustable pickup . don't screw the original pickup up, you would regret that. step away from it for a while and think it out.

This is exactly what I have settled on.

I read somewhere that the strength of the signal will be effected, the difference between the poles will be less, and that the signal is actually clearer (apparently?).

Anyways, I'm taking that advice with a grain of salt. The bass sounds a lot more even now, but the E still isn't where I really want to be, but I guess I'm being a bit petty - EQ can take care of it from here. I just need to remember my Maton's & Fender all have a stronger E than the Rick, and turn down the bass knob.
