I guess it depends on when it was made. I bought a 3001 case in 1979 that was the same width as a 4001 case.
Sometime in the mid '70s, the base cases were widened. The early ones are the same dimensions as a P-Bass (not Jazz) case.
I guess this was to accommodate more padding.

Oh, bother. Now I have to dig it out!

Internal width of the 3001 case is 13". For comparison, the internal width of my 4000 case is 14½".

I bought the 3001 online, so it's possible that it's not the original case, but I have no particular reason to think it is not. For one thing, it fits the bass perfectly. The 3001 is from June 1977.

LOL! Yeah, my early 70s cases are narrower than the later ones. It may have been changes in the specs, the changes with manufacturing (Victoria Case Co seemed all over the place) or a combination of the two...

I dunno. My 4000 is from February 77.
