So where am I supposed to take the reading?
Ron was talking about the "PU hot lead terminal." He indicated I could access it by taking off the baseplate. But as I just mentioned, after taking off the baseplate I see nothing there other than those 2 wires.
Do you know where the "PU hot lead terminal" is?

Yep - those two wires are what you measure across.
The coil assembly can be removed from the base; I think it's only held on by the two screws, but I'm not sure it gets you anywhere (unless it exposes the point at which the white wire is connected.
If you're not confident (the internal wires are thinner than a hair and about as fragile - I have to say that I broke one!), a pickup specialist can likely test it before deciding to go the whole-hog and do a rewind.
