I think that all tone pots are connected to ground there, but maybe not the bass volume?

Either way, it's some pretty ham-fisted soldering! :)

Also, what are the thicker coloured wires coming off the jack socket(s) connected to?

When you are in mono and have both pickups on, both tone controls affect both pickups.
If you switch to just one pickup, then only that one's tone should be in play; this requires the tone cap to be connected to the pickup connection of the selector switch (as per my comment about the SD schematic - the Ric one which has been mentioned is correct).

Have you taken out the mono jack? If you plug in two jacks, you just connect everything to earth and will get no output.
If you put a mono jack into the stereo/ROS socket, you should only get the treble pickup. If you slightly pull it out, you should get just the bass pickup.

Which country are you in?

I realize Joey took his older diagram down do to mis-use issues, but it's not like this is some kind of top-secret info. If nobody else is willing, I'll volunteer to draw up a 4003 wiring diagram that can be stickied. I could care less who uses it, as long as it's accurate. I'm an electrical idiot, but I can draw a clear diagram in Autocad.

The basic diagram I use is also from Joey's website, otherwise I'd post it. I've bassed a lot of what I do on it.

Those are actual wiring schematics, which most people are unable to read. An actual diagram similar to the ones on the SD siite would be more helpful.

I think a combination of the schematics, the SD ones and photos of real control harnesses covers it.
