He's already looked up the serial number over the years and it translates to a 1971. Story is he was under the impression it was a '68 when buying. He later found out it was the 71 and was disappointed. Guess that doesn't matter 2017.

It's too bad that '71 wasn't a 21 fretter. Those aren't all that common and IIRC, were primarily made in 1971.

1971 was not a large production year. There were fewer then 850 instruments in total made that year, many of them being 4001 basses and 331 Lightshow guitars. We have 112 collected from 1971 so far.

The only two 1971 AZGLO 4001 basses we know about were both made in December - KL814 and KL831.

It is a nice old bass, if my own opinion counts for anything... :P

Possibly the best example of an early 70's AZG I can remember. I'll concur with chef and say very late '71, especially as the other two examples are December basses.

Fabulous!

This feedback is greatly appreciated. I'd like to try for better pics soon.

I hope this pic works. It looks to be a Nov 1971.

In being completely truthful I thought the same thing...

Yeah, I know, it was not an easy thing to post, truly. Actually, the first thing that popped in my head was Kerry King, which sort of lead to the second thing.

KK 739 = November 1971. (No other meaning then that).

Also that it was the seven hundred and thirty ninth instrument RIC made that year.

Gotta love sequential SNs!

Thanks for sharing this information about the bass.

No problem. Glad I could show it to the community after knowing it's been sitting in a closet for over 35 years.

I think that '70 was the primary year for the 21r's.
