They were not used until many years later.

You might want to check the string gauges, as that is often a source of intonation issues. Also - and please don't be offended by my asking this - is it a full scale 3001 and not a short scale 3000?

Yeah, it's a short-scale 3000, not a full scale 3001. 'Course both use the same tailpiece/bridge, so four of one, a third of a dozen of another!

There's a picture if Chris Squire's Ric with the tailpiece moved towards the end of the body and leaving some of the mute bay exposed.

Hmm, if so, it was moved after sometime in 2006. I just looked through my photos of the Syn show I saw on January 15 of that year, and there is no mute cavity exposed on his RM1999. Or perhaps, it is a different Rick bass of his you are referring to?

BTW, RIC is the company that makes Ricks.
