Looking at the pictures you shared, I'd say the reason for the binding cracks are (possibly) the binding material has slowly dried out over the years, functionally does not affect the sound, and, at some point should you decide, easily fixed.

Very nice looking 4003 otherwise, and in overall great shape, congratulations, play the frets off of it and enjoy it.

Thanks, i will ;-). The cracks doesn't really bother me.. it just adds to the mojo.

The bass has spend quite a time in storage at the previous owner, so that might be the reason.

I had a couple of early 90's 4003's and I liked them, they had thin necks and powerful pickups. I also had a 1978 4001 and it was a great bass, wish I'd never sold it.
