Sorry it had to go under the knife. Good luck and please keep us posted! If you can get pictures that would be so nice. You need to bake your band some cookies or buy pizza or Chinese for them... sound like a good bunch!

After taking it to 3 other 'luthiers', all of who could not remove the rod, I was recommended a local luthier who has it at the moment.
He will have to remove the fretboard to get the rod out. I had a long conversation with him last night and he seems to be know what he is talking about. He is not a RIC spcialist by any means, but he does seem to know what problems could occur.
He even went and bought some new tools to make sure he was going to do a good job. The bass is on the operating table today, so just waiting to hear how the surgery went.
The guy seems to know what he is talking about and is up front and honest about what needs to be done. He says it won't be cheap, but he is willing to let me pay for it in installments, so that is a relief.
My band has had a couple of practices in preparation for upcoming gigs. Without the Ricky it does not sound the same. The other members are on board with getting the 4003 up and running. They are even willing to chip in for the repair. What a bunch of guys!!!!
I can definitely relate to the "not sounding the same" thing. I've experimented with a few different basses. My bandmates put up with it for a while, then one will say something like, "Don't you think it's time you went back to a Ric?"

Yeah, I've had the same experience when using my other basses with my bands. While they like my other basses, my band members seem to prefer my Rickenbackers. They just seem to "sound right" in the mixes.

Hope it goes well and that’s nice to hear about the band, they sound like good guys.

Thanks for all the kind responses.
Spoke to the luthier last night. He has removed the mangled rod. Yes!!!!!!!
Will drop the replacement rod to him today. Have asked him to do a complete set up too. I will only be trusting my bass to him from now on.
He is a younger guy, but definitely knows his stuff.
When the 4003 has returned, I will update you all.
My band are diamond geezers. Cheerleading from the sidelines. Ha ha ha... They can't wait for the mighty Rickenbacker to return...

Be interesting to hear what he did. Hope it comes back in fine fettle.

Shaun
I had a brief conversation with the luthier yesterday. He has filmed the repair and says he will post it on YouTube for all to see after it is completed.
I'm curious to see the 'ins and outs' of it too.
