Also do the 4001 S models have the older truss rods? v63s have the modern 4003 rods for RW strings and no neck problems. Otherwise a local guy has a '80 4001s all done up nicely with the vintage parts including Horse Shoe, but I've been spooked off by the potential for neck problems. Is it an ok substitute for a v63 or should I hold out for the real deal?

A 1980 4001 will have the older truss rods if it has the walnut stripe ... the v63 has a better neck ...
I have owned 3 pre 1980 4001's ... all had fine necks ... I was too scared to try to adjust the truss rods myself ... but they didn't need it ...

I didn't think the dot neck S models had the stripe reguardless of vintage. This one is mellowed white so no body parts are visible. Maybe in the cavities, I can check. Either way I'm sure it has the older rods.

Don't let the old 4001's scare you, just follow directions and you won't have any problems as long as it is ok now. Some of them had necks like tree trunks, I have Fender flats on a 78 4001 here and the neck does not move at all. And the later 70's and early 80's 4001's had stronger necks anyway usually.

Jeff: "Who's is that one?"
It's for sale for $1400 from a local (Minneapolis) shop. I just thought all things being equal, it's a lot considering v63s are going for less than that on a good day. I'd really love a Jetglo v63. Only seen 1 for sale in recent memory and he pulled the plug early. I'd pay dearly (and have to) to get one of those.

I would purchase any v63 under $1500 as long as there were no mods and it's in good shape. It's a tremendous sounding instrument and has collectibility.
No way that store still has it.
