One of the nicest Ric necks I've ever played is a 2030 ... it has a nice jazz bass like taper ... my 3 4003s5 basses all have about the same neck ... 1989, 1990, 1998 ... I like the 70's Ric necks a lot ... the 60's 4001 neck is amazing ... they can be bent like a whammy bar while playing ... I used to pull back the increase fret buzz on notes I wanted to emphasize ... very cool ...

Paul asks a good question about the new truss rod system relative to neck size. My first Ric was a '77 4001 with a slim neck that can be bent as Jeff describes. I was really surprised by the neck thickness of my '02 4003 when I received it; it some getting used to. I recently acquired an '80 4001, this one's neck is as big as my '02.

I think they are all a little different due to hand sanding, I have 78 and 79 4001's here in Lima and the necks are very different, the 79 is much slimmer (and much weaker). The 79 is much treblier, I don't know how much that has to do with the neck.
