Hey you're right Dave!!! But Seymour Duncan's probably done pretty well for himself, and I've used his pickups in F****rs and they're great... Never tried his Rick replacement pu, but never felt the need to...

Joakim: The main difference is the hotter output. I live in Lisbon, Portugal.
Gene: Your December 1973 4001 is basically like my April and my June 1974 4001s.
Not to impugn on Seymour's work, but from most reports his Rick-style pickups are less than satisfactory, and from pictures I've seen they deviate a lot from the originals in looks and design. I understand his F****r-style pickups are great, though.
Maybe he should try and be the next Rickcrazy - that way he could come up with the ultimate Rick-style replacement pickups...

i just bought a new bass a back up to my ric, i am going to change the pickups to duncan 1/4 pounders but i would not think the duncan ric replacements are any better for the ric

How do you mean, a back up to your Rick? A 4001? A 4003? Care to share some pics thereof with us? If it's not a Rick, forget it.

The Duncan Ric replacement pickups are humbuckers ... they are pickups that are truly without a soul or personality ... very bland sounding ...

The 1/4 pound pickup is a nice pickup for the p-bass and jazz bass the old vintage p-bass/tele bass pickup could be used in a Ric treble position ...

I am interested in trying this someday ...

I once tried a J-style Carvin H50N stacked humbucker in the treble position. Didn't care for the sound that much, the tone was clear and it still sounded like a Rick for the most part, but it lost a lot of aggression and growl. It was quiet though! (being a humbucker)

I just got a Ric bass with Duncan pickups in it, they are THE worst sounding pieces of krap I have ever heard in my life! They have a hollow twangy trebly sound that is just horrifying. Souless is a perfect description, like they sold it to the devil. I wouldn't even put them on Ebay, I wouldn't want to do that to someone, I'm too honest: Want your Rickenbacker to really REALLY sound bad? Well buy these pickups, etc.
I took someones advice here and am using the treble pickup as a refrigerator magnet.

Oh mine, were dual; single coil and humbucking and were wired for single coil. shudder!!!!!

kurt ... I tried carvin pickups on a ric ... they were kinda lame on a Ric ...

I read an article lately about Spock's Beard's bassist, and I'm sure those of you familiar with them know about his crazy hotrodded Rick he's put together (which was apparently a beater he got cheap.) Four Jazz pickups (he said the original RIC pickups were dead, but the pickups he chose (forgot which model/brand, I'd have to check the article again) sounded pretty close to a Rick pickup), two in the standard Rick locations, and another set in the standard Jazz bass positions. The controls are all wired so he can choose pretty much any pickup configuration, and he even left the Rick-O-Sound and the .0047 capacitor intact (I think the cap is only usuable with the ROS jack, again I'd have to check the article again.)

sergio, i bought the cheapest bass i could find as a back up for bad weather we have here in the north east USA. i didnt want to take my prize musical possesion out in minus 18 degree weather!
that maybe a bit anal buti longed for this bass since the first time i heard one in 1978.

i will say that in cost it was the cheapest bass i could find but it is better than squires and most mim fenders i have tried.
