I cannot for the life of me figure out how anyone who calls himself a luthier can have a hard time intonating a Ric bass. All you have to do is make sure the neck is adjusted correctly, the bridge height is correct and loosen the string you want to adjust, simple. (I realize that there were supposedly a few basses with incorrect placement of the tailpiece but I have never encountered one and think they are far and few between)
A luthier who complains is just plain lazy, he wants something he can intonate in one minute and charge fifty bucks for. With a Ric bass because of the small range of intonation adjustment available, you also have to make sure it is set up correctly, if you can't intonate your bass it is almost always a set up problem (too much bow in the neck, bridge too high, etc.), at least in my experience with about twenty different basses I have had a few that were right on the fringe of their range but they still could be intonated.
