The myth of 'Eight Miles High' being about drugs needs to be laid to rest. Drugs may have influenced the Byrds' songwriting, but 8MH is definitely about their trip to London and their impression (negative?) of British culture. This is clear through any reading of the Lyrics.

... or so they've said, and I truly believe that. What the song is about is one thing, but it doesn't mean the insight for the song wasn't born out of some smokey haze. It's almost certain they, like most groups of that time, were experimenting with various substances and it had to affect the music, good and bad.

The Byrds were not as high as the song suggests. I understand that it was was initially titled "Six Miles High."
