My 360-12 sounds very close through my Fender Ultra Chorus solid state. This amp has the cleanest and most transparent tone of any amp I have played. All of the crisp high-end of the guitar is heard giving me that vintage Byrds tone. For the Back From Rio sound I use a Digitech X-Series Main Squeeze. The Digitech hisses a bit more than the Boss, but the bass strings are much more musical - the Boss just goes "thump". I just give it a moderate amount of compression and turn the treble up on the tone knob a bit.

Peter: Do you know what settings Roger McGuinn uses on the POD? Which amp model, cabinet model, compressor paramaeter values, volume and tone values, etc.?

I disagree Nick. I can hear a heavily compressed 12-string right away. The way that the the pick attack seems to be really minimized, and the sustain and evenness of all the notes, even the bass strings. There is no sound like a properly compressed 12, it almost drones.

Jim: Good question. No, I do not.

I guess I was thinking mainly Byrds, not the sounds that we here on something like the Reo album. If you want that sound, just by a one of those signature series guitars, it will be a step in the right direction.

When running my 370/12 through my POD 2.0, I get the closest approximation to McGuinn's 60's sound when I have the Black Panel (Fender) amp model dialed up with a 2x12 cabinet model. You have to remember that the Byrds were using Fender amps back in the day, forced on them by CBS. Any compression setting on the POD between 7 & 10 will suffice for the "Sound". McGuinn uses the Brit Blues (Marshall) amp model on his POD. It's a more bass-heavy sound, which is necessary for his solo act. For that extra compression boost, (Fifth Dimension album sound), I run my Marshall compressor pedal into the POD, hence doubling the compression.

I sent email to McGuinn and asked him about his POD settings and he replied with the following:
Brit Blues
12 X 12 speaker cabinet
compression / delay 7
reverb 3
bass 3
treb 5
mid 3
He suggested that I just play around with those approximate settings till it sounds right. Previously I also had used the Fender Black Panel and 2 X 12 cabinet model. McGuinn's settings are a little more bass heavy than I expected but it sounds good with my 360/12.

Great work Jim. Thanks for passing this information on from Roger McGuinn.
